New York embly debate on abortion 1969-1970

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Two clips from the dramatic events of the New York State embly debates on abortion law repeal in 1969 and early 1970. Includes footage of emblywoman Constance E. Cook arguing that “I submit that we have abortion on demand in the state of New York right now. Any woman that wants an abortion can get one–if she has $25, she has it done here, under the most abominable circumstances,” and that prohibition only drives abortion underground; and footage of emblyman George Michaels changing his vote, at the last minute, to break a tie and pass the bill, saying “I fully appreciate that this is the termination of my political career. But Mr. Speaker, what’s the use of getting elected, or re-elected, if you don’t stand for something?”
